Connect2 and You

Photo of people enjoying the connect2 eventThe winning bid was decided in December 2007.

Thanks to everyone who voted for Sustrans' Connect2 in the People's £50 million lottery giveaway, Southwark Council has won a share of the £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund for Sustrans to invest in walking and cycling UK-wide.

The council will be allocated an estimated £600,000 to spend on improving walking and cycling facilities. This is an amazing achievement for the South Bermondsey community and the borough as a whole.

What this means

Southwark winning a portion of the £50 million has secured

  • The restoration works planned for the bridge
  • Planting of trees,
  • Installation of street lighting
  • The improvements to walking and cycling links

transforming South Bermondsey and making it a more pleasant place to get to and around.

Connect2 and you

Comments already received from local residents include

  • "I like cycling. The whole path is a leisure facility in its own right. It is free, inclusive, for all those who can’t afford the cinema, swimming pools and other expensive things that seem so common now"
  • "Other parts of the community could also use the space. It could encourage mother and toddler groups or something similar, to come along the same way. We could even build a park next to the bridge. There is lots of space and plenty of room for benches too"
  • "I would so love to see this project succeed, there are so many excellent positives that will be made across the whole community. Good luck we need you!"

Opening the bridge

Opening up the bridge will unlock over 15km of walking and cycling links and help tackle the problems with congestion and pollution.

The bridge is a real chance to open up the opportunities of central London to the residents of Bermondsey.
