Connect2 in SouthwarkThanks to everyone who voted for Sustrans' Connect2 in the People's £50 million lottery giveaway, helping Southwark Council to win a share of the £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund to invest in walking and cycling UK-wide.
Southwark Council has secured £600,000 to spend on improving walking and cycling facilities. This is an amazing achievement for the South Bermondsey community and the borough as a whole.
The money will be used to restore the disused rail bridge at South Bermondsey station, plant trees, install lighting and improve walking and cycling links.
This project is part of the 79 schemes nationwide overcoming barriers in local communities including
- Busy roads
- Waterways
- Railway lines
Opening up access
This project will help to combat the difficulties people have in crossing busy roads and reduces fumes and noise from big vehicles. The bridge will also help to open up access to Rotherhithe New Road for pedestrians and cyclists to the station, shops or bus stops.
Work on the Connect2 project will start early in 2008 and will take five years to complete. We will continue to update you on project progress.
