Sustainability Assessment Supplementary Planning Document

Image of mural wave from building in CamberwellSupplementary planning documents (SPD) are taken into account when deciding on planning applications. These documents give further guidance on the detail of the council's development plan. They can be based on

  • Subject matter
  • A specific area

Sustainable development involves balancing social, economic and environmental impacts to ensure the best possible development. The aim is for a good quality of life and environment now and in the future.

The sustainability assessment SPD is being prepared to explain how sustainability assessments should take place to ensure social, environmental and economic factors are considered and balanced to get the most sustainable development possible. The council requires a sustainability assessment to be submitted with all development applications proposing ten or more dwellings, or 1,000 square metres or more of floorspace.

Consultation on the draft SPD

Consultation on the draft SPD started on October 23 2008 and will finish at 5pm on December 4 2008. You can view copies of the draft Sustainability Assessment SPD and accompanying documents below

The SPD and accompanying documents are also available to view at the Town Hall, Chiltern House, and at all libraries, Area Housing Offices and One Stop Shops in the borough. You can request a paper copy by contacting the Planning Policy Team. All comments must be received by 5pm on Thursday December 4 2008.

You can comment on the SPD by filling in a response form and and returning it by post, email or fax to:

If you make a representation on the draft SPD we will contact you regarding this. We will also inform you when the SPD is adopted. All comments must be received by 5pm on Thursday December 4 2008.

What happens next?

After the consultation period is over, the responses will be considered and amendments to the document will be made if required. The SPD is due to be adopted in January 2009.
