How to Comment on Planning ApplicationsIf you wish to comment on an application:
- write to us by email or letter
- state your reasons for objection or support
- state the application number.
You should ensure your comments reach us before the expiry of the consultation period shown for the application. The application will not be decided before this period expires.
We may consider comments received after the deadline, until the application is decided, although this is not guaranteed.
Comments marked "confidential" will not be taken into consideration.
Who will see your comments
To take your comments into consideration, they will be available for inspection by the public and the applicant on this website, listed under documents relating to the application on the register, and at our offices.
Your comments will be summarised and referred to in the report on the application. These reports are also available for inspection by the public. If an appeal is made against the council’s decision on the application all comments received will be sent to the applicant and The Planning Inspectorate who may also publish them on their website.
Protecting your personal data when you comment
As your comments can be seen by others you should take care about what personal information relating to you is also included when sending your comments. We do not require your name, signature, email or postal address or any other personal information.
However, if you do not give us your postal address we may not be able to fully assess the impact of the development on you or give much weight to your comments. If you give us your postal address we will acknowledge receipt of your comments and notify you of the council’s decision and any subsequent appeal. Decisions and appeals can be seen on this website.
If you send your comments as a separate attachment to your letter or email with no personal information, other than just your postal address, only the attachment will be available for inspection.
If you provide us with your name and contact details these will be included in our planning applications database but will not be used for any purpose other than to contact you further in respect of this application and any subsequent appeal or proceedings resulting from the council’s decision.
Please ensure therefore that you only provide information, including personal information about you, that you are happy will be made available to others. If you give information belonging to someone else please ensure that you have their permission to do so.
What can you comment on?
The following checklist gives examples of the type of thing you can comment on that will be taken into account in deciding the application.
- Design and size of the development
- Use proposed
- Traffic generation and parking
- Will it be a nuisance because of noise etc
- Will it fit in with the surrounding area
- Will it affect my amenity in terms of daylight, privacy etc.
- How it complies with planning policies and guidance
- Possible S.106 planning contributions or benefits for the community that could be secured from the proposal
- Any other relevant material planning or environmental issues.
Objections or comments based on personal grounds, such as the sex or race of the applicant, the effect on the value of your property or private views, boundary disputes or competition for your business are not valid material planning considerations and will not be taken into account.
