Making a planning application

To make a planning application you need to submit

  • the appropriate completed and signed application form, the  fee (pdf 130kb) and ownership certificates

  • accurate metric scaled plans of the proposal and location plan outlining the application site in red

  • additional information in support of the application such as background brief and relevant photos as stated in the guidance notes and local planning application requirements.


Who can make a planning application?

Anyone is allowed to make a planning application in respect of any land or buildings and they do not have to own the freehold or have any other ownership interest in that land.  If you are wanting to submit an application it is advisable to employ a professional such as a chartered town planner, surveyor or architect to prepare drawings and make the application for you.

You will save considerable amount of time by ensuring you complete the application forms fully and provide all the necessary plans and supporting documents referred to in the guidance notes relevant to your application.

Pre-application advice

We can provide pre-application advice if you write to us. However, in all but the most straightforward cases there is now a charge for this service (pdf 53kb). If you want to seek pre-application advice you will need to complete the application form (pdf 146kb) and send it to us with the fee where one is required. 

Important guidance notes for planning applications

You need to refer to the guidance notes provided by the Department for Communities and Local Government when making your planning application. We use these national policies when assessing your application.
