Listed Buildings and Buildings at Risk There are approximately 3,000 listed buildings in Southwark.
A listed building can be a building, object or structure that is of national, historical or architectural interest. All such structures are included on a list drawn up by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
All listed buildings are of special interest and they are classified in grades to show their relative importance. The grades are I, II* and II. Grade I buildings are of paramount importance to the nation and grade II* are of outstanding interest.
Most of the listed buildings in Southwark are grade II. We also have a number of grade II* buildings and a few grade I buildings.
Details of all the listed structures in Southwark are available from design and conservation.
Details of listed stucutures in England and Wales or from Images of England.
Carrying out work on listed buildings
Works to the interior or exterior of a listed building must be authorised through granting listed building consent. It is a criminal offence to carry out works to a listed building without prior listed building consent.
The design and conservation team can advise whether a listed building consent is required before work is done to a building. The general rule is that regular maintenance and repair 'like for like' does not need consent but any other works than repair, internally or externally, will probably need consent. If you are planning to undertake work on a listed building, we advice you to check it with a duty planner first on 020 7525 5438.
