Hazardous Refuse

More than five million tonnes of hazardous refuse is produced each year in England and Wales. The  legislation means that as of July 2005 waste classed as 'hazardous' must be disposed of separately from non hazardous refuse. This will lower the risk of damage to our environment and our health.

What is hazardous refuse?

Refuse is classed as 'hazardous' when it contains substances or properties that might make it harmful to human health or the environment. Up to now, types of refuse classed as hazardous have included substances such as chemicals, asbestos and other toxic materials.

The European Commission has classed as 'hazardous' some everyday objects that we wouldn't normally consider to be harmful, such as batteries and PC monitors.

How do I dispose of hazardous refuse?

Asbestos or chemicals

The Corporation of London's hazardous refuse collection service will collect asbestos or chemicals from your home, provided they are packaged ready for collection.

Residents are entitled to one free asbestos collection and three chemical refuse collections per year.
