Junior StreetLeader EventsBoroughs unite to clean up their streets
On Friday February 2, the year four class at Boutcher School hosted an afternoon for a group of year six children from St Anthony's, Newham to learn how to become Junior StreetLeaders. This is what the pupils of Boutcher School had to say about the day:
We talked together about our likes and dislikes of our environment. We all agreed that we have some great open spaces to play in, like Spa Park, but each of the places have their problems. Often we find dumped rubbish, graffiti and dogs mess in our area. We do not want to have to live among these things so we want to do what we can to get rid of these nasty things.
Here at Boutcher School we go out and audit the streets in our surrounding area once a month with Dave Taylor from Southwark Council. We make recommendations to him and the council about what needs to be improved.
Even if it is not a day when we are going out to audit the streets, we can still make our concerns known by sending a special check card in the internal mail, and the council come and clear up the problem.

It's a really good way of getting things done, so we taught St Anthony's all about it. They do not have a Junior StreetLeader Scheme in their area yet, but we hope they will now they've seen how much they can achieve.
The afternoon was a great success. It was good to share what we have learnt with others, we didn't realise how much we knew! We feel like we have done a good job at helping others to understand how we look look after our environment.
Hopefully now the people from Newham will try out some of the things we do in Southwark - maybe then we will have a cleaner and greener place to live and work in.
