Become a StreetLeader

  • Street Leader recruitment poster with text stating 'If you care about your environment, become a street leader'.Do you live in Southwark?
  • Do you care about your local environment?
  • Do you want to help improve your neighbourhood?

If you've answered yes, then you could volunteer to be a Southwark StreetLeader.

As a StreetLeader, you will be able to help your community by reporting environmental problems, suggesting ways to improve your local area, and being a proactive enviro-champion.

How about becoming a housing StreetLeader as well?

  • Do you live on a Southwark housing estate or in street property?
  • Do you care about your local housing environment?
  • Do you want to help improve your housing area?

If you have answered yes, then you could also volunteer to be a Southwark Housing StreetLeader as well.

As a housing StreetLeader you will be able to help your community by reporting housing environmental problems which will offer tenants and residents an opportunity to make their views count by having more contact with the council on housing environtmental matters.

There are already over 500 StreetLeaders around Southwark who make a huge difference to their local area every day. You don't have to give up lots of time, you don't need any special skills and this role is open to anyone.

StreetLeaders are fully supported by a team of council officers at Southwark council. The support team make sure that StreetLeaders are trained to deal with problems in the right way and have the right tools to carry out their role as enviro-champions.

The views and opinions of StreetLeaders are incredibly valuable to the council, so this is your chance to make your voice heard and really make a difference to your local environment.

Street leader logoStreetLeader frequently asked questions

Q: How much time do StreetLeaders have to give up?

A: You don't have to give up a set amount of time, your role as a StreetLeader can become part of your every day life. All you have to do is keep your eyes open for anything that has a negative effect on your local environment and report it to us. Reporting is done via a free phone number or using freepost postcards. StreetLeaders can also report problems using  online problem report forms.

Q: How big an area are StreetLeaders expected to keep an eye on?

A: It depends on how active you want to be. You could choose just to look after the street you live on, or you could cover any Southwark streets that you regularly travel through on your way to work, school, to the shops or while walking your dog. If you are housing street leader you could choose to report on your floor, your block or your whole estate or street.  It's up to you.

Q: What types of things are StreetLeaders expected to do?

A: Most of what you do will simply be reporting environment problems. The most common of these are

  • Abandoned vehicles
  • Dog mess
  • Fly-tipping
  • Graffiti
  • Litter bins
  • Potholes
  • Blocked drains
  • Upkeep of parks
  • Lifts
  • Corridors and corridor lighting
  • Door entry systems
  • Fire doors
  • Anything else that you think is causing a concern to the local community

StreetLeaders also have the opportunity to take part in activities such as environmental audits – this is simply a blitz on a specific area that may have a lot of problems.

Q: Do StreetLeaders get any training?

A: Yes. New StreetLeaders will complete an induction into the scheme and will also be trained to use graffiti removal kits (only for small amounts of graffiti), recognise different types of enviro-crime and learn how to report them.
