Southwark is a very leafy borough and the council's Arboricultural Section have a lot of trees to look after:
- 12,500 trees growing on streets and roads
- 15,000 trees on Southwark's housing estates
- 15,000 trees in Southwark's parks
There are also thousands more growing in woodland areas from Rotherhithe to Dulwich.
The borough's trees are made up of over 100 species, including traditional favourites such as London Plane, Chestnuts, and Oak, as well as many small ornamental trees such as Cherry and Magnolias. Southwark is also the proud owner of an English Elm that has managed to survive Dutch Elm Disease and continues to thrive on Westminster Bridge Road. |
