Recycling The Easy WayRecycling is everybody’s responsibility - play your part!

Southwark's recycling rate has more than quadrupled since 2002. Last year, together we recycled and composted 20 per cent of our waste. This year we need to meet an even higher target, as we work towards achieving 30 percent by 2010/11. We can only achieve this success if all residents play their part and recycle.
To encourage as many people to recycle as possible, we have a Tag It To Bag It campaign. If you recycle and tag your blue box or bag, clear bag, garden waste bin or bag, or you use your local recycling centre, you could win £1,000!
Recycling the hard way
In addition, from May 2007, the council's recycling enforcement officers have been monitoring the collections of refuse and recycling in all areas of the borough that are eligible for the blue box and bag recycling service.
This followed a very successful pilot scheme introduced in November 2006, which monitored recycling in five areas across the borough.
Our officers are available to give extra support to help people with recycling. However, residents who persistently refuse to recycle could ultimately be issued with a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).
Before we issue an FPN, we will always make sure that we have made every effort to encourage and support use of the recycling services.
If your property is within the area being monitored, you will receive a leaflet (pdf 663kb) explaining how the recycling service works.
