Organic waste

Did you know that up to a third of your waste is organic and can be composted? You can easily reduce the amount of waste you produce by composting at home. Home composting is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your kitchen and garden waste. It's not difficult and will provide you with excellent compost that can be used in your garden or window boxes!

Composting occurs far more quickly during the warm, summer months; why not order your subsidised compost bin or wormery this week?

What can I compost?

  • Raw fruit and vegetables
  • Tea bags, coffee grounds and coffee filters
  • Eggshells
  • Egg boxes
  • Plant remains (including cut flowers and house plants)
  • Grass cutting
  • Weeds
  • Old flowers and bedding plants
  • Young hedge clippings
  • Leaves

In addition, small quantities of the following can be composted

  • Cardboard
  • Shredded paper
  • Woody prunings
  • Sawdust

Remember - to get the best out of composting, use a mixture of materials in your bin

What can't I compost?

  • Meat, fish and bones
  • Dairy products
  • Large woody materials such as branches
  • Processed wood
  • Animal waste
  • Waxed cardboard containers
  • Diseased or poisonous plants
  • Disposable nappies
