Organic waste
Did you know that up to a third of your waste is organic and can be composted? You can easily reduce the amount of waste you produce by composting at home. Home composting is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your kitchen and garden waste. It's not difficult and will provide you with excellent compost that can be used in your garden or window boxes!
Composting occurs far more quickly during the warm, summer months; why not order your subsidised compost bin or wormery this week?
What can I compost?
- Raw fruit and vegetables
- Tea bags, coffee grounds and coffee filters
- Eggshells
- Egg boxes
- Plant remains (including cut flowers and house plants)
- Grass cutting
- Weeds
- Old flowers and bedding plants
- Young hedge clippings
- Leaves
In addition, small quantities of the following can be composted
- Cardboard
- Shredded paper
- Woody prunings
- Sawdust
Remember - to get the best out of composting, use a mixture of materials in your bin
What can't I compost?
- Meat, fish and bones
- Dairy products
- Large woody materials such as branches
- Processed wood
- Animal waste
- Waxed cardboard containers
- Diseased or poisonous plants
- Disposable nappies
Great composting offers for Southwark residents!
Southwark Council have teamed up with CRISP (Community Recycling in Southwark Project), to offer all residents the opportunity to home compost, regardless of whether you have a garden or not.
The following subsidised scheme are currently available:
Home composting kits
For residents with a garden the home composting kit is available for only £10, plus £5 delivery charge, and includes
- Compost bin
- Kitchen bin with sealed lid to separate organic waste from other waste
- Guide to composting
- Free access to our home composting helpline 020 7252 7709
The compost bin is made from recycled plastic and has a capacity of 325 litres. It comes flat packed but is very easy to assemble.
Wormeries
Perfect for households that would like to compost but don't have access to a suitable garden, wormeries are a recent addition to Southwark Council's home composting project. They are great if you have a small patio or balcony and produce nutrient rich compost that can be used in your window boxes or plant pots! Wormeries are now available to Southwark residents at a much reduced rate of £10, plus £5 delivery charge, which includes
- Wormery unit, consisting of two boxes measuring approximately 150mm, height by 300mm, width by 600mm, length

- Worm composting manual
- Free access to our home composting help line
How can I purchase a composting kit or wormery?
Both units are available directly from CRISP. Please send a cheque made payable to Elephant Jobs, together with your name, address, phone number and email address to:
