No Butts! Dropping any kind of litter is irresponsible, antisocial and can result in a £50 fine.
What's the problem?
Every day UK smokers throw away around 200 million cigarette butts. 75 per cent of street litter in Southwark is smoking related. Cigarette ends are litter just like anything else dropped on the street.
Smoking related litter includes
- Cigarette filters
- Packaging, cellophane, foil, plastic and paper
- Lighters
- Lighter parts
- Matches
The small size of smoking related litter makes it difficult to sweep and it often gets trapped in paving cracks, weeds, grates and gullies. When it's wet, cellophane and foil is difficult to sweep up as it sticks to the pavement or road.
What are we doing about it?
The number of litter bins on Southwark's streets has already been doubled as part of the commitment to a cleaner, greener borough. So, if people don't want to risk a £50 fine that butt has to go in the bin!
There are ashtrays on most of the litterbins in the borough and you can get a free stubbi holder, a small pouch for disposing of cigarettes butts in a safe way, so there is no excuse for dropping litter.
Get your FREE stubbi holder
You can get a free stubbi holder from community wardens patrolling the borough, or if you are a Southwark resident, send your name and address to street.improvement@southwark.gov.uk and your free stubbi holder will be sent through the post.
