Awareness Raising and EducationWe're running a number of awareness raising campaigns and educational projects aimed at changing the way people think about the environment.
Stalking litter
A giant discarded crisp packet, half-eaten burger and a cigarette butt! What is this all about? These oversized pieces of litter are roving the streets of Southwark doing a series of performances to entertain and remind people that
- Littering is anti-social
- Littering is a criminal offence
- And that it doesn’t take much to use a bin!
See the giant litter in action. Find out more about the campaign.
No butts!
Surveys undertaken in Southwark and London have highlighted smoking related litter as a significant problem. It is estimated that 122 tonnes of cigarette butts, wrappers and matches are dropped every day in the UK.
Smokers are often reluctant to use litter bins for fear of bins catching on fire, so they litter the ground instead. Littering is a criminal offence and you can receive a £50 on-the-spot fine, even for dropping smoking related items like cigarette butts.
Now that most litter bins in Southwark have ashtrays on and we are giving away free stubbi holders, a small pouch for disposing of smoking related litter in a safe way, there is no excuse for dropping litter on the floor! Find out more or to receive your free Stubbi holder.

Blingin' or mingin' - what are ya?
Blingin' or Mingin' is our youth litter campaign aimed at getting children to think about how their actions can affect their environment. People who look after where they live are blingin', and people who mess it up are mingin'.
Have a go at our multiple choice quiz to find out if you're blingin' or mingin'. Email the street improvement team if you would like a copy of the Blingin' or Mingin' launch event on CD or DVD. Find out more information about litter and street cleaning.

Do we have to rub your nose in it?
Do we have to rub your nose in it? is our ongoing campaign to raise awareness among dog owners about dog fouling. We provide free poop scoop bags for dog owners, which you can pick up at your nearest neighbourhood housing office or library. Find your nearest neighbourhood housing office or find your nearest library.
And there are many new dog bins around the borough. We run dog and family events to remind everyone that the penalties for not cleaning up after your dog are a £50 fixed penalty or prosecution in court. Find out more information about dog fouling.
Flag the poo
Look out for orange flags among the grass! Flag the poo is here and is all about shocking dog owners into cleaning up after their dogs. Find out more about Flag the Poo.

Shop them and stop them
Shop them and stop them is an anti-graffiti campaign currently running in many areas of Southwark. We're offering a reward of £500 to anyone who gives us information that leads to the prosecution of persistent 'taggers', people who graffiti. Find out more about how we're tackling graffiti.
