Support for Gifted Children Between five and 10 percent of pupils are gifted and talented children, who learn at a faster pace than the majority of their classmates. They require an enriched and extended learning programme both within the curriculum and in addition to it, at a pace that suits them.
Identifying gifted and talented pupils
Schools use a wide range of identification methods, including cognitive ability tests in year seven, standard assessment tests (SATs) results and teacher and parent recommendations.
Progress and performance monitoring
Progress and performance is monitored at least twice each year, usually by the school's gifted and talented pupil coordinator, who provides support and advice and decides whether a child should remain on the gifted or talented register.
Teaching methods
Pupils will be set more challenging work in lessons, so they can progress at a faster pace, and examine subjects in greater depth. There may also be voluntary lessons after school.
Extra tuition
Complementary short and longer term courses are available free of charge during the holidays in schools, universities or museums. Examples of recent courses have included website design, drawing, philosophy and basketball. Summer schools are also run for gifted and talented children in years six, seven and eight.
