Terms and acronyms used in Southwark schools for the future (SSF)

The SSF programme uses a wide range of specific building, construction and education terms.
These are listed below. If we have missed something or our information is not clear, please contact us as per the details at the bottom of the page.

Term Description
ASD Autistic spectrum disorder
BESD Behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
BSF Building Schools for the Future, a national programme
CLN Complex learning needs, when used in relation to a special school
CLN Community learning network
CPD Continuing professional development
CTC City technology college
CYPP Children and young people’s plan
D&B

Design and build, a type of contract to build or refurbish a school

DfES Department for Education and Skills, an old name of the DCSF.  See also below
DCSF Department for Children, Schools and Families
ECM Every Child Matters, a national strategy
FAM Funding allocation model
FM Facilities management, a service provided in every school to manage their facilities
ICT Information and communication technology
IEP Individual education plan
L2 Level 2, which is 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades, or equivalent qualification to GCSE
L2 E/M Level two including English and maths, which is as L2 above but includes English and maths
L1 Level one, which is five or more A*-G GSCE grades, or equivalent qualification to GSCE
LAA Local area agreement is an agreement between the council and central government
LEP Local education partnership is a limited company that will deliver the SSF programme
MLD Moderate learning disabilities
MLE Managed learning environment
NEET Not education, employment or training
OBC Outline business case, the council's case to gain funds from central government
OJEU Official Journal of the European Union, where we advertise to potential bidders
PCT Primary Care Trust
PFI Private finance initiative is a type of contract to build or refurbish a school
PfS Partnerships for Schools is the central government body responsible for BSF
Phase Period of time in which a particular group of schools will be built
Phasing Stages of construction of a particular school 
PMLD Profound and multiple learning disabilities
PQQ Pre-qualification questionnaire
PRU Pupil referral unit
Preferred bidder The company we want for a LEP partner, before we have signed a final agreement
PSP Private sector partner who will be a partner in the LEP
RE Religious education
Res unit Resourced unit, offers specialist provision within a mainstream school
SBC Strategic business case, the overall SSF strategy given to central government for approval
SEBD Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
SMT Senior management team, within Southwark Council departments
SpLD Specific learning disabilities
SPA Special partnering arrangement, relates to how the LEP works
SPV Special purpose vehicles
SSF Southwark schools for the future, a Southwark programme
VAT Value Added Tax
Wave 3 Third wave of the national BSF programme, which funds the SSF secondary programme 
WBL Work based learning
