Exclusion

Children who get into serious trouble through breaking school rules or have harmed the education or welfare of themselves or others can be excluded by a headteacher or acting headteacher from school, on either a fixed-term or permanent basis.

If your child is excluded you should be called on the day of exclusion and also sent a letter with details of the exclusion period, the reasons for it and who to contact.

Fixed term exclusions

Fixed exclusions run for up to 45 days in any school year. If your child receives a fixed term exclusion you can put your views to the school governors at a public discipline committee who will meet to discuss your case.

For exclusions of 15 school days or under in any one term, you can provide a written statement to be discussed at the meeting.

For 15 school days or over in any one term, you and your child will be invited to attend the meeting in person. The governors will decide if the exclusion was justified and have the power to reinstate your child for exclusions of over five days

Permanent exclusions

Permanent exclusion means that your child can no longer attend their school and will have their name removed from the school roll.

If your child receives a permanent exclusion you will be invited to attend a public discipline committee meeting, to decide whether your child should be reinstated. If your child is not re instated you can put your case to an independent appeal panel.

Children who are permanently excluded after an appeal will be found a school place at either another mainstream school or a pupil referral unit (PRU).
