National Curriculum The national curriculum states the core subjects children learn at school. All pupils in local authority maintained schools, aged 5 to 16, follow the national curriculum, which is split into four key stages. Additionally there are special targets for those aged three to five in early years education, known as the foundation stage.
The curriculum sets out
- The subjects taught
- The knowledge, skills and understanding required in each subject
- Standards or attainment targets in each subject - teachers can use these to measure your child's progress and plan the next steps in their learning
- How your child's progress is assessed and reported
For good general information about understanding the national curriculum visit the Directgov website.
Visit the national curriculum website for a more detailed look at how the curriculum is broken down.
Translating the curriculum into lesson plans
Many schools use the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority schemes of work to plan their curriculum. These help to translate the national curriculum's objectives into teaching and learning activities.
