Pupil Health
A sick child will be unhappy in the classroom. If your child appears unwell on a school day
- Telephone the school at the beginning of the day to record their absence
- Keep your child at home until they are well enough to return or have received treatment from a doctor
The school will work with you to minimise disruption to your child's education. The school may be able to send learning assignments home, if appropriate. If your child is in hospital, a hospital school may be available.
If you have a concern about health matters in relation to your child's education, raise it with your child's school who can then contact the school nurse or doctor.
Sickness at school
Schools must, by law, provide a space which can be used for the treatment of sick or injured pupils, and for first aid and medical examinations.
Your child's school
- Has a named nurse and doctor
- Must let you know if your child has an accident or becomes injured while in their care
- Receives clear information from the local health and education authorities, including advice on immunisation schedules and how to prevent or report on infectious diseases
School health service
The school health service is responsible for
- Assessing the health needs of children entering school at five and 11 years
- Providing a school health immunisation programme
- Screening for growth, hearing and vision problems
- Undertaking child protection monitoring and offer support
- Providing counselling and advice to children, young people, teachers and parents
- Providing drop-in health advice sessions and care planning for those with special needs
