Starting secondary school booklet coverChildren attend secondary school between the ages of 11 and 18.

To have the best chance of getting your child into the secondary school of your preference for September 2009, you must apply by October 24 2008.

Before you apply

  • Use Southwark's school finder for information about schools. Directgov also has useful information
  • Download the Starting a Secondary School booklet (above) for full details on Southwark schools, the admissions process and an application form (pdf 490kb).
  • Visit schools and view their admissions criteria
  • Select six schools and decide on an order of preference
  • Submit a supplementary form, if required by each school

You can list any school you prefer even if it is not in Southwark, however, you must ensure you read and understand the admission criteria for each school.

How to apply

  • Apply online. The London eAdmissions system allows you to search for school information and apply online for school places.  
  • By paper application. See PDF above for application form or request a copy from admissions below

Offers of a place

  • Online offers will be available to view online from 8.30am on March 3 2009
  • Paper offers will be sent out by first class post on March 2 2009
  • Acceptance of all offers by parents and carers is required by the closing date of March 16 2009. Any offers not accepted by 16th March may be withdrawn
  • A further round of offers is made for places freed up by any declined offers in April and May 2009.

How to appeal

You have the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel for each school you made an unsuccessful application to. Contact the school/s directly to find out about their appeals process and to obtain an appeal form. Please be aware that schools may have different closing dates for submitting an appeal.
