Starting Nursery or Primary School

Most schools have nursery classes attached which will take children from aged three to five and admissions information for these can be found in the booklet available below.The following link opens in a new window 

If your child is not able to get a place, the family information service has information on alternative full day nurseries and pre school playgroups.

Primary

Children attend primary school from the beginning of the September or January following their fifth birthday to the age of 11.

The primary school application deadline for entry in September 2008 or January 2009 was January 25 2008. If you have not yet applied, you must do so as soon as possible.

For those children born between September 1 2004 and August 31 2005, who will be applying for a school place for 2009/2010, the closing date for these applications is January 23 2009. Parents/carers can start applying now.

Before you apply

  • Use our school finder for information about primary schools
  • Alternatively, for schools in the wider London area and for school profiles and performance data visit Directgov
  • Download the Starting a Primary School booklet for full details on Southwark schools, the admissions process and an application form
  • Visit schools and ask about their admissions criteria
  • Select four schools and decide on an order of preference
  • Submit a supplementary form, if required by each school

You have the right to apply for a place at any primary school of your preference, however, if you choose to apply for a place at a primary school not in Southwark, you will need to complete the common application form (pdf 480kb) for the relevant local authority.

How to apply

  • Apply online. The London eAdmissions system allows you to search for school information and apply online for school places
  • By paper application. See the booklet above for application form or request a copy from admissions

Offers of a place

  • Online offers will be available to view online from 5pm on April 24 2009
  • Paper offers will be sent out by first class post on April 24 2009
  • Acceptance of all offers by parents and carers is required by the closing date of May 8 2009, any offers not accepted by parents and carers may be withdrawn
  • A further round of offers is made for places freed up by any declined offers in May 2009
  • Appeals for school places will be heard June/July 2009

How to appeal

You have the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel for each unsuccessful application to a school

For Southwark voluntary aided or foundation schools contact the school directly for information on their appeals process
