Stay Safe

Boy flying kite and another riding a bikeThe Young Southwark Partnership is responsible for ensuring children and young people in borough meet the five Every Child Matters outcomes. The information below sets out the agenda for 'Stay Safe'.

What is meant by 'Stay Safe'?

  • Safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation
  • Safe from accidental injury and death
  • Safe from bullying and discrimination
  • Safe from crime and anti-social behaviour in and out of school
  • Have security, stability and be cared for
  • Parents carers and families provide safe homes and stability

Priorities for Southwark

  • Reduced incidences of crime against children and young people

Other areas for development are

  • To continue to focus on improving services for looked after children, and children with disabilities
  • To continue to progress against national and local targets around information sharing and storing
  • To continue to address issues such as high levels of black African referrals to social care, private fostering and community safeguarding
  • To continue to reduce the numbers of looked after children and prepare for introduction of the Care Matters green paper
  • To improve the range of local respite provision for children with disabilities

What have we achieved so far?

  • Comprehensive advice, guidance and training for all partners and the community, including parents and focusing on early intervention
  • A strong Safeguarding Children Board which has successfully gained borough-wide support for local issues such as domestic violence and travelling to and from school
  • Improved management of the child protection register
  • Improved practice in referral, assessments and risk management for social care
  • A strong fostering and adoption service and an increase in numbers of adoptions and special guardianship orders
  • Well co-ordinated and safe services in place for children with disabilities or learning difficulties
