New guidance on safeguarding children from abuse linked to a belief in spirit possession
This non statutory guidance has now been published by the Department for Children Schools and Families. Download a copy of the guidance (pdf 384kb). The Southwark Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) is currently considering how best to implement the procedures locally.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has published recent research into reports of child abuse linked to 'possession' and 'witchcraft'. The report concludes that, although numbers are small, there are common features between cases which occur across a range of different faith groups. The number of cases being identified does seem to be rising.
Africans Unite Against Child Abuse (AFRUCA) have issued a press release expressing the view that the problem is more widespread than the report has identified and is calling for greater regulation to protect the community from 'unscrupulous individuals' and those who 'carry out bogus exorcism rites mainly for self gain and personal recognition'.
