Free e-learning for everyone working with children or adults in Southwark

The training is free to everyone, paid or unpaid, who works with children or adults in Southwark. This includes all workers and volunteers for Southwark Council, the NHS, the police, voluntary groups and faith groups.  We have a leaflet (pdf 383kb) which explains who the course is for, how it works and how to apply.  For copies, please contact us at the address below.

This training is useful for

  • Sports coaches
  • Street wardens
  • Park rangers
  • Sunday school teachers
  • Youth workers
  • Faith leaders
  • Private tutors
  • Music teachers

What you will learn

  • What harms children
  • How to recognise when a child may be being harmed
  • What to do if a child tells you, or you suspect, they are being abused

There are two levels

  • Foundation, for anyone who needs to be able to recognise a child who may be abused and know what to do eg street warden, sports coach, library worker
  • Core, for those whose work, paid or unpaid is with children or parents. This course has more detail and takes longer to complete

You can try the courses out before you apply. Visit the virtual college and search for awareness of child abuse or neglect.

Ignore the cost, Southwark will sponsor you to do the course for free.

You do not need advanced computer skills. If you can shop on the internet you can do this course. You need to have access to a computer that can access the internet, at work, at home, at an internet café or similar. Southwark residents can use the internet for free in their local library.  You do not have to complete the course in one session, each stage is saved until you can continue.

How to sign up

Please fill in an application form.  If you have any other questions, please email Debra.Quee@Southwark.gov.uk.
