This includes all workers and volunteers for Southwark Council, the NHS, the police, voluntary groups and faith groups. We have a leaflet (pdf 383kb) which explains who the course is for, how it works and how to apply. For copies, please contact us at the address below.

What you will learn
- What harms children
- How to recognise when a child may be being harmed
- What to do if a child tells you, or you suspect, they are being abused
There are two levels
- Foundation, for anyone who needs to be able to recognise a child who may be abused and know what to do eg street warden, sports coach, library worker
- Core, for those whose work, paid or unpaid is with children or parents. This course has more detail and takes longer to complete
You can try the courses out before you apply. Visit the virtual college and search for awareness of child abuse or neglect.
Ignore the cost, Southwark will sponsor you to do the course for free.
You do not need advanced computer skills. If you can shop on the internet you can do this course. You need to have access to a computer that can access the internet, at work, at home, at an internet café or similar. Southwark residents can use the internet for free in their local library.
