Southwark Youth Council Structure

There are several strands to the structure of Southwark youth council.

Health and Social care

  • To update all youth participation project members on issues impacting on young people’s health
  • To encourage young people who have disabilities to get involved with the SYC
  • To participate in a variety of training programmes (counselling, first aid and supervision, drug awareness sexual health and disability awareness)
  • To represent the voice of young people on local health forums

Public Relations

  • Plan recruitment of new members
  • Research, monitor and inform the public about the developments of SYC
  • To plan publicity and marketing strategies for SYC events and conferences
  • To provide the public with information about the services provided by SYC informing the local community through local media, newspapers and magazines
  • To forge links with other youth forums both local and national

Community safety and regeneration

  • To maintain lines of communication with local police and the Safer Southwark Partnership on youth issues
  • To provide regular information on issues affecting young people’s safety in Southwark
  • To consult local young people on a broad range of regeneration issues in local areas

Training

  • To plan, facilitate and evaluate participation workshops for all new and existing SYC members
  • To train groups of young people to develop their own youth club or area forum
  • To support the development of school councils in partnership with school personal advisors
  • To evaluate learning needs of SYC and other specified groups
  • To continuously evaluate and develop if necessary new training methods and strategies with various youth training providers

Education

  • To establish a line of communication between schools and youth participation projects
  • To represent the voice of Southwark young people on a variety of boards and
    committees
  • To support and facilitate citizenships workshops
  • To work with local schools and youth councils on recruitment drive to provide continued support throughout the development and evolution of school councils
