Childcare

Childcare worker and child playingThere are a number of options when it comes to childcare. Find out what's on offer to help you choose childcare which best suits you and your child's needs.

Family information service

The family information service can advise you on childcare options and availability in your area. These services provide quality, impartial information and guidance on childcare, early education and other children's services. We hold information on Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) registered childcare such as day nurseries, out-of-school clubs, pre-school playgroups and childminders, as well as unregistered childcare such as parent and toddler groups.

After and before school childcare

The after school service provides term time after-school clubs based in primary schools across the borough.

Children's playrooms

Children's playrooms are based in Southwark's parks and cater for children under five years old during term time and up to eight years during school holidays.

Crèches and groups

Crèches and parent and toddler groups information.

Childcare support scheme

The childcare support scheme is run by advisors who give one-to-one support and advice in finding childcare to suit your needs. We offer advice in finding financial support to cover the cost of childcare while you study, train or work and put you in touch with people who can help you access the training and employment that is right for you.

Choosing childcare

Choosing childcare requires research. Entrusting a stranger with your child is a big step, so take a look at our advice.

Out of school clubs

Out of school clubs enable children to play, learn and have fun in groups. The services are geared to the needs of children with working parents or carers and are usually based in or near schools.

Pre-school playgroups

Pre-schools playgroups, also known as playschools, operate in places like local church or community halls. Children in pre-schools are usually aged between three and five, but often there are places for two year olds as well.
