Olympic Handover Event London as host city
On August 24 2008 an Olympic Handover Flag was raised at Camberwell Green to celebrate the moment when London became the official Olympic Games Host City.
The flag raising event was accompanied by a showcase of local sporting and cultural talent, as well as interactive workshops and activities such as live music and athletics competitions.
The athletics took place on a new state of the art portable running track. The 60m track which has six lanes was recently purchased by Southwark Council's Community Sport Team and is available for hire to local community organisations.
The event got Southwark's involvement in the London 2012 Olympic Games off to a flying start. Over the next four years the council hopes to help get the people of the borough more physically active.
The 2006 Active People Survey that was conducted by Sport England found that only 18.4% of 16 to 80 year olds in Southwark did three x 30 minutes of exercise a week on average.
The council is already working hard to improve those figures, and it plans to use the 2012 Olympics as an opportunity to make a lasting difference by improving leisure and cultural infrastructure, increasing engagement and participation levels in sports – especially among young people – and cultural activities and improving levels of health.
