Investing in Leisure
In February 2007 Southwark Council agreed to allocate £12.3 million for the refurbishment of its leisure centres. This is the most that has ever been provided for this purpose and is more than any other London borough is currently spending on such a project.
The first phase of the £12.3 million investment involves the complete refurbishment of Dulwich Leisure Centre at £5 million and Surrey Docks Watersports Centre at £2.3 million.
The council has also allocated £1.5 million to go towards a sustainable investment solution for Camberwell Leisure Centre and is spending additional funds to ensure that the centre remains open while this is being sought.
Finally, although brand new state-of-the-art centres will be provided at Canada Water and Elephant and Castle, the council will be upgrading the current centres in the interim. Details of the new centres and upgrades to the current facilities at Elephant and Castle and Seven Islands will be available in the near future.
In 2007 we held a consultation with residents and users of Dulwich Leisure Centre and Surrey Docks Watersports Centre and since November there have been conceptual graphics displayed at each Centre.
Please see the links to the leisure centres below to find out more about the investment programmes.
