Get Active

A group walking session for adultsHealth improvement programme

We deliver health activities and initiatives in Southwark. Our aim is to encourage participation in some form of sport or physical activity and make it a natural part of everyday life.

Adults should be aiming to do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on at least five days of the week. The first step is to build more activity into your everyday routine.

For example you could try the following

  • Get off the bus a stop or two early and walk the rest of your journey
If your journey is less than one mile try walking or cycling. It might
even be quicker than taking the car

  • Get a pedometer to count the number of steps you take each day and work out your average daily steps over seven days (record your total steps for seven days then divide that by seven). Try to increase your average daily steps by between 5% and 10% each week

  • Park your car at the back of the shopping centre car parkSeated exercise for older adults

  • Go for a walk during your lunch break

  • Walk all or part of your journey to or from work

  • Don’t use the lift. Take the stairs all or part of the way up and down

The Get Active programme of activities currently includes:

  • Older adults exercise classes

  • Exercise to music

  • Ante natal (during pregnancy) and post natal (after pregnancy) progressive exercise

  • Walking sessions

  • Line dancing

Classes are available to all adults regardless of ability.

Please take a look at the links on the left hand side for more details and timetables on the different activities that are available.

Did you also know that the Southwark adult learning team also organise opportunities for you to be active. Please see here for further information about health, fitness and dance classes.

If you would like more information on how you can increase your physical activity levels through group classes, walking or using a pedometer contact the Health and Wellbeing Team below.
