Paralympic Handover On Sepeptember 17 2008, Southwark celebrated the Paralympic handover with a special event for young people from local special needs schools.
The event called Boundless Outdoors celebrated the occasion by allowing 90 young people from across south London to participate in a variety of sports. It took place on the attractive setting of Potters Field next to City Hall.
The schools from Southwark that took part were Tuke, Highshore and Spa and the activities on the day included:
- boccia
- tennis
- basketball
- seated volleyball
- tag rugby
- athletics.
The sports were co-ordinated by Southwark Council's community sport team and valuable support was provided by the staff of the Southwark Community Games along with local sports clubs including Burgess Park Tennis Club, MACPRO Basketball and Southwark Tigers Rugby Club.
Pictured opposite are Alex, Tyrone and Michaela from Spa School in Bermondsey. They took part in nine sports including athletics on the community sport team's new portable running track.
Councillor Lewis Robinson, Southwark Council’s Executive Member for culture, leisure and sport was part of the handing over ceremony and he said:
“The Paralympic Handover event will be a highlight of the Boundless Festival this year. Southwark Council is proud to support the Paralympics.”
The Boundless Outdoors event was part of the 2008 Boundless Festival. The festival is a celebration of disability arts, sports and culture across Southwark.
