About the plan
The plan will be delivered over the next five years by the Southwark Alliance in partnership with older people themselves and the agencies that provide them with services.
Independence and wellbeing for life was developed with the active participation of older people and other stakeholders during an intensive consultation process held from June 2005 to January 2006.
During these consultations we talked with older people about their needs and listened to what they have to say about what really matters and used that to produce the strategy's key actions. A summary of the responses from the consultation is available from the Southwark Alliance website.
Key action areas
We will achieve our goals by working on the following four key action areas
- Actively enjoying life – a positive approach to ageing
- Independence and safety in the home and community
- Economic wellbeing and opportunities in later life
- Health and social care that older people need
Goals of the plan
Specifically, as a result of action taken under this plan, we want older people to be able to
- Plan for their future and have positive attitudes and approaches to ageing
- Take action to prevent problems before they occur
- And when they do occur, take action to minimise the impact on the quality of life
- Find it easier to locate and use services, activities and volunteering opportunities in their local area
- Access social, cultural, sport and leisure activities to be healthier and active for longer
- Be more independent and feel safer inside and outside the home
- Actively participate in the community and have a voice on how services are delivered
