Safeguarding Adults

safeguarding adults picHelping vunerable adults

The Safeguarding Adults Team helps prevent vulnerable adult abuse.

Vulnerable adults are people who need assistance from health or social care services and are over 18 years of age.

Abuse is a violation of human and civil rights, and there are seven main forms of vunerable adult abuse

  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Psychological abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Neglect
  • Discriminatory abuse
  • Institutional abuse

Find out more about the seven forms of adult abuse.

Our campaign

We have recently launched a hard-hitting campaign highlighting the issue of vulnerable adult abuse using posters and leaflets. The campaign features images of the main forms of abuse, and it emphasises the message: 'don't turn your back on adult abuse'.

The posters can be seen on bus shelters throughout the borough, and the flyers have been distributed to GP’s surgeries, pharmacies, libraries, council offices and elsewhere in the community. Related articles have also appeared in Southwark Life and other partner magazines.

Read more about this campaign.

Take action against abuse

If you are the victim of abuse of if you think someone is being abused, you can contact the duty social work team or Southwark Police on the telephone numbers listed below.

If you are reporting abuse it is helpful if you can provide your name to enable further contact, but you can also report suspected abuse and not disclose your identity should you wish.

We have put together some more helpful information in FAQs: Safeguarding Adults.
