Safeguarding adults helps vulnerable adults who are experiencing adult abuse.
Who is a vulnerable adult?
Vulnerable adults are people who need assistance from health or social care services to maintain their independence and wellbeing and are over 18 years of age.
What are the main types of vulnerable adult?
There are four main types of vulnerable adult
- Someone with learning or physical disabilities
- Someone with mental health problems
- Someone who is old, frail or ill
- Someone who cannot always look after or protect himself or herself
What is adult abuse?
Adult abuse happens when a vulnerable adult has their independence or wellbeing threatened or compromised.
What are the main types of adult abuse?
There are seven main types of adult abuse
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Psychological abuse
- Financial abuse
- Neglect
- Discriminatory abuse
- Institutional abuse
What to do if you think adult abuse is taking place
If you think someone is being abused or someone is abusing you, contact the duty social work team or Southwark Police on the telephone numbers listed below. If you are being abused and feel unable to call us yourself, tell someone you trust and ask them to do it for you.
