Food poisoning affects more than 5 million people in the Uk every year. Hand washing is the most important way of preventing the spread of germs. Bacteria can multiply from 1 to 1 million in just seven hours, so before you start eating or preparing food, make sure you wash your hands with soap.
Hands must be washed especially:
- Before handling food
- After contact with blood or body fluids
- After using the toilet
- Before and after changing babies’ nappies
- Before and after dressing wounds
Shock survey results!
A recent survey by the Food and Drink Federation found that:
- 26% of men and 17% of women say they do not always wash their hands before preparing food
- 31% of men and 17% of women say they do not regularly wash their hands after using the toilet
