What's happening on the Heygate? Plans to demolish the Heygate were announced over seven years ago. More recently the decision to have everyone rehoused by September 2009 means a lot of work has gone into bringing a team together who will support Heygate residents through this.
A case management team specifically designed to support Heygate residents through the rehousing process have set up office on the estate. The office is located in the old Dr's Surgery above Heygate shops and serves as a one stop shop. This means that Heygate residents now have the opportunity to meet with their case management officer face to face and keep up to date on their individual rehousing process.
The case management office operates an ‘open door’ policy so residents can drop in to the office to bid for properties on Southwark Homesearch, receive advice on schools and health facilities in the area that they will be moving to and keep up to date on their individual moving process.
Because the rehousing of tenants is happening over time, the fabric of the estate is not being ignored either. An estate management team ensures that repairs, refuse collection and cleaning are well maintained and the estate is kept safe.
Engaging with residents
A number of events have been held at key points in the project to ensure residents are informed on project progress, and are actively engaging with the case management team.
A meet the team event gave residents the chance to visit the newly located office and meet their case management officer face to face. This was followed by a Leaseholders Open Evening in January, designed to showcase the options available to leaseholders and to show the process of buying back their properties.
More recently, a bidding and customer support event was held in early April where residents had a chance to get help with bidding for homes on Southwark Homesearch, receive information and advice on different customer support packages available to them such as Homeloss and disturbance payments, and shared ownership schemes.
Various partner organisations attended and were on hand to provide information on the support packages available to ensuring residents experience a smoother rehousing process.
