- Plans Approved for Newington South Housing Development
August 4 2008
Southwark Council’s planning committee approved Wandle Housing Association’s application for the Newington South (Camberwell New Road) development at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The scheme designed by architects, Cartwright Pickard, will deliver 113 new homes with a mix of affordable and private housing, incorporate 10 wheelchair access units, extensive bicycle storage, and provide retail space on the Camberwell New Road frontage.
Wandle Housing Association, who is developing the site, will contribute open space/public realm improvements and new play facilities on land at the rear of Hanworth House. The development, which will link in with the sustainability strategy for the Elephant and Castle, will also include a landscaped courtyard, car club spaces and provide community safety benefits.
Councillor Paul Noblet, Southwark Council’s executive member for regeneration, said:
"I am pleased that work can now get underway on building homes for Heygate residents who have opted to move back to the new housing sites being developed as part of the Elephant and Castle regeneration project.
I look forward to seeing the other housing schemes moving into the planning system over the coming months, and to working with local people and Heygate residents to achieve the best possible designs for these much needed new affordable homes".
Wandle Project Manager Waheed Chaker said
“Wandle is thrilled to be initiating this exciting project, and begin to unlock the potential in the Elephant and Castle area.”
