Heygate News The Elephant and Castle regeneration will deliver new, quality homes for Heygate residents. The estate is central to the regeneration proposals for Elephant and Castle as the council plans to demolish it to make space for new homes, shops, community facilities and a new public park.
Council tenants living on the Heygate will be offered a choice. They can either move to a brand new home at Elephant and Castle, which will be built and managed by a housing association, or remain as a council tenant but move to a council home elsewhere in the borough.
New homes for Heygate tenants will be built on 16 council-owned sites in and around Elephant and Castle. The council will be working in partnership with two housing association consortia to build the new homes over the next four years. The five housing associations which make up the two consortia are
- Family Mosiac and Affinity
- Guinness Trust, Wandle and London & Quadrant
Southern Housing Association and de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects have designed a demonstration housing project at Wansey Street that will show Heygate residents the size, type and quality of the homes that will be on offer to them. This was completed in August 2006.
Many residents are understandably concerned about what this will mean for the future.
To support residents through this process, a case management team has been set up on the Heygate Estate to keep residents informed of plans and to support them through the rehousing process.
