Partner picked for £1.5 billion  Elephant revival
Elephant and Castle is steeped in history, it is mentioned it in the writing of both Shakespeare and Dickens. The area has always been an important central London transport hub and a centre for shopping and entertainment. It was once known as ‘the Piccadilly of South London’.
After the area was heavily bombed during World War Two, it was redesigned to feature a large roads with two roundabouts, the country’s first enclosed shopping mall and a maze of subways to move pedestrians around the area.
Now the shops, homes and offices at the Elephant and Castle do not match the quality found in other areas of central London. Southwark Council is therefore leading a programme to bring major redevelopment to the area and to ensure that this programme works for the benefit of local people.
Over the next eight years, Heygate Estate and current shopping centre will be demolished and replaced by a new town centre and six character areas, including a stunning market square and new town park. There will be 5,300 new homes, 75,000 sqm of new shops, five new open spaces, landmark buildings, a tram route and a civic heart for Southwark.
The regeneration will dramatically improve the quality of the physical environment, creating the conditions necessary to stimulate investment, re-invigorate the local economy and promote sustainable long-term regeneration.
A framework for development was created by Southwark Council during 2002 and 2003 and was officially adopted by the council’s executive committee at the beginning of 2004 following extensive public consultation that revealed an 80% support rate by respondents.
