Employment
What is the employment strategy?
The Southwark employment strategy was developed in 2002 to address high levels of unemployment and deprivation in Southwark.
The aim was to support key partners with meeting targets while improving the way we all work together, and creating employment opportunities for Southwark's residents.
The strategy was revised in 2006 to include important changes since 2002. The revised strategy updates the headline targets and sets out a plan of action to remove barriers to employment including improving access to employment for disadvantaged communities.
Please note, from October 8 2007 employment and enterprise task groups are known as employment and skills partnerships and enterprise partnerships.
Funded projects
We manage a variety of funded projects (pdf 77kb) to improve employment and enterprise opportunities for local people, particularly residents from disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
Projects are funded from a variety of sources including direct funding from us or from Section 106 agreements associated with major physical developments. Funding is also available from external organisations such as the London Development Agency.
English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)
Language can be a big barrier to successful employment. We have funded a number of projects to help people learn English. A report has been published into the provision of ESOL classes in Southwark.
Employment support
We have also developed Southwark Works for people with barriers to employment including long term illness.
Independent evaluation reports have been written for the Southwark Works programme (pdf 351kb) and the Worklessness Multi Agency Initiative (pdf 89kb).
