Southwark Disability Forum, in partnership with the Council and voluntary sector, are holding an event on Independent Living.

It will be held on the 16 September from 12 noon until 5.30pm at InSpire - the Crypt at St Peter's, Liverpool Grove, off Walworth Road.

The event is open to disabled people and anybody working or volunteering in the disability field. It is part of Boundless, Southwark's inclusive arts, sports and culture festival.

Independent Living is an idea that has been developed by disabled people and has been influential on policy makers. Lord Ashley proposed legislation last year and it has led to the development of services such as ‘Direct payments’. The seminar will provide a forum to bring people together and talk about what Independent Living could mean in Southwark.

The day will be a combination of films, speeches, panel discussions, stalls, workshops and informal ‘Cafe Conversations’ covering issues such as:

  • Being better off - benefits, employment and financial advice to support economic wellbeing and independence
  • Individual Budgets
  • Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender issues
  • Self advocacy, assertiveness, empowerment and lobbying

The afternoon will formally start with speeches and a Panel discussion on Independent Living. Panellists include David Morris, advisor to the Mayor on disability issues.
