Developing our Community Southwark Council is committed to supporting the community. Community involvement and development unit (CIDU) works closely with local groups across the borough, delivering projects to enable increased participation and involvement of residents, and providing support to local initiatives throughout the borough.
Best value review of community involvement and development
CIDU is a testing body for performance indicators in community development and involvement, administered by the Community Development Foundation and Audit Commission. The aims of this project are
- To agree a vision for community involvement and development
- To develop improvement plans for the effective delivery of community development and involvement in the borough
- To develop a service delivery action plan
Forums and events co-ordination
This includes co-ordinating the piloted Southwark Area Consultative Forums and supporting the new Southwark Community Council inititiatives.
Research
Community audits and surveys, including action research.
Neighbourhood renewal
Supporting neighbourhood renewal work in priority neighbourhoods.
Community cohesion
CIDU works with the voluntary sector to tackle inter-generational, inter-racial and inter-cultural tensions. We are also expanding our current work with young people in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, to include both other themes and other areas in the borough.
Encouraging community involvement
CIDU provides ongoing support to a number of groups. We believe that when people come together they can make positive changes to the lives of others within their community. The community council are a great example of this.
