Borough, Bankside and BermondseyThis unique area is undergoing a sustained period of change with many new developments and attractions moving into one of the oldest parts of London. More visitors are enjoying the area's charming character and residents are closer to the vibrant heart of a world city.
The Frameworks and implementation team
We develop and deliver framework strategies, environmental improvement and urban design schemes in the north of the borough. Because of the development pressures and community aspirations we need to be innovative in our approach to preserve and enhance the special character of Borough, Bankside and Bermondsey.
Schemes may be coordinated through area based strategies such as the Borough and Bankside Streetscape programme, Bankside Lighting Strategy, Light at the End of the Tunnel and the London Bridge Framework or carried out as individual projects.
Our link with Section 106
Our aim is to maximise the benefits of Section 106 regeneration funding for the residents and businesses of North Southwark. Many of the schemes we deliver turn the developers contribution into a community asset. We also played a key role in developing the Section 106 Supplementary Planning Document.
The sort of work the team is involved in includes
- Open spaces, squares and parks
- Traffic management
- Cycle routes
- Streetscapes
- Lighting
- Public Art
- Tunnel and bridge refurbishment
- Community facilities
Check out the wide range of projects we have delivered at the side of this page.
How would you improve your area?
It's important for the community to have input into the planning process. So we invite anyone who lives, works or studies in Southwark to submit project ideas for their local area to the Community Project Bank. We use these ideas in our negotiations with developers about their section 106 contributions.
Our part in regional strategies
The team's work also contributes to regionally strategic programmes. For example both the Bankside Urban Forest and Potters Field Park are included in the London Mayors 100 public spaces. Recent refurbishment of The Cut was the first completed area based scheme funded by Transport for London.
Project partners
No one can do it alone, so we work with other council departments and partners to coordinate projects and ensure a great outcome for the local area. We work in partnership with organisations including the London Development Agency, Cross River Partnership, London Bridge BID, Better Bankside, Transport for London, Bankside Open Spaces Trust and major developers such as More London and Land Securities.
