Renewal areas

After the successful transformation of the Bellenden area, Southwark Council identified another two renewal areas (pdf 725kb) in 2005. These were

  • East Peckham
  • Nunhead

What is a renewal area?

Photo of arch over path in Bellenden renewal areaA renewal area is a way of coordinating funding services in a defined geographical area where it is recognised that there are housing, social and environmental needs. Renewal areas aim to revitalise shops, commercial premises, the local environment and the infrastructure. We want to make a positive and sustainable impact on the well-being of our residents. Through working in partnership

  • With other council departments
  • The private sector
  • The community

we aim to develop initiatives which deal with problems identified by people who live or work in renewal areas.

Our funding

In 2005 we allocated funding for improvements, better housing and a better environment in East Peckham and Nunhead areas.

These funds continue to be invested in various programmes including

  • Promoting benefits of sustainable development
  • Making changes to open spaces
  • Traffic improvements
  • Lighting improvements
  • Encouraging residents to become part of neighbourhood decision making

Schemes

Get involved

We would like to hear from residents in renewal areas who are interested in working with their local community and who would like to become part of the neighbourhood decision making process.

Volunteering in community groups

If you want to become part of the decision making process in your neighbourhood, or would like your views to be known to your local community, register your details with the renewal team.

There are a number of community groups and voluntary sector organisations in East Peckham and Nunhead looking for new members, along with opportunities to get involved with your local community council.

Arts and artists

We are currently establishing a database of artists who live in and around the two renewal areas. This will give us an opportunity to work with local, famous or famous to be, talents. Your skills and abilities could be put in use to make improvements to your local environment.
