Making Peckham Safer

Sally Butcher from Persepolis“I got an alert box for my shop free through Peckham Programme. I can use it to summon help at a moment’s notice. It keeps me in touch with my nearest neighbours and gives me a sense of security when I am open late in the evenings.” Sally Butcher, Persepolis

Tackling crime in Peckham

At the beginning of 2007 there was a spate of gun crime involving teenagers in London. Peckham Programme is working with The following link opens in a new windowcommunity safety to tackle crime, fear of crime and antisocial behaviour.

In addition to the regular police presence there are The following link opens in a new windowSafer Neighbourhood Teams covering the community council areas and the distinctive, red-jacketed wardens. The police regularly attend the community councils, report on crime statistics and listen to any residents’ concerns about crime or antisocial behaviour.

We aim to prevent our young people being victims or perpetrators of bullying, antisocial behaviour and crime. They can be more vulnerable at the end of the school day. Since January, the local police and community wardens have had extra patrols to ensure young people leave school and travel home safely. CCTV is being better used to safeguard young people.

New facilities for youths

Peckham Programme has opened new facilities such as Central Venture Park and supports youth work that gives young people interesting things to do, diverts them from antisocial behaviour and crime and helps them avoid becoming a victim or perpetrator. LINK to Youth section.

The programme has also funded community based organisations such as The following link opens in a new windowFrom Boyhood to Manhood and the Eternal Life Support Centre based at the SAFE shop near the library, which do a lot of one-to-one work with black boys in Peckham at risk of becoming involved in drugs, gangs or violence.

Busy town centres attract crime and antisocial behaviour. In Peckham we have schemes in place to protect both the daytime and evening economies with alert boxes and radios so traders can support each other.
