Creative Peckham

Lamp post in BellendenTop creative hot spot

Peckham is rapidly gaining credibility as a cultural quarter. It is ideally situated between two prestigious art institutions – Goldsmiths College and Camberwell School of Art.

It has several art networks, including the Area 10 Project Space and The Surgery. They organise exhibitions, events and “happenings”. In 2006 the Independent newspaper called Peckham the top UK creative hotspot.

World-renowned artists Tom Phillips, Anthony Gormley and Zandra Rhodes designed some of the street furniture, such as lampposts and bollards in the Bellenden renewal area. Peckham library, designed by Will Alsop, and Peckham Square are modern London landmarks.

The role of the arts

Arts - including community arts – are hardwired into any plans for Peckham’s continuing regeneration. A thriving cultural life has the scope to improve the physical environment and make the area different, to bring all sections of the community together and raise expectations and aspirations.

Peckham Programme manages capital projects including the Peckham Pier, a gallery space planned in partnership with Camberwell and Chelsea School of Art that will be on Peckham Square and accessible to the local community.

Will Alsop has designed Peckham Pier, while sculptor Sokari Douglas-Camp is designing a colour palette for the spruced-up Choumert Market facades.

Peckham creative events

Peckham Programme runs I Love Peckham, a series of events that includes Celebrating Women in Peckham, Star Academy, the Flavas of Peckham festival and the flagship I Love Peckham festival, an established seven-day programme of events that involves local youth, businesses, cultural venues, residents and artists.

Peckham Programme hosts the Creative Industries Group, a network of local artists, agencies and organisations working with the arts to ensure a diverse and inclusive cultural input into local regeneration and town centre management.
