Southwark in Bloom rewards those who help make Southwark the cleanest and greenest it’s ever been.
The deadline for entries has now passed. Thanks to everyone who nominated their favourite local space.
Competition categories
- Best wildlife friendly garden
Open to all wildlife areas. Judges will be looking for range of habitats and plants that attract wildlife as well as sustainable use of resources such as recycled materials. We are particularly interested in projects that involve the wider community.
Best front garden Open to all residential properties that have a front garden, with year round planting, which is visible to the public. Judges will look for year round interest and overall impact.
- Best balcony or container garden
Open to all residential properties displaying hanging baskets, window boxes and containers. Judges will look for attractive displays that make good use of the available space.
- Best community area
Open to all gardens or areas that are created for the shared benefit and enjoyment of others. Judges will be looking for areas where resident, tenant or community groups have worked together to improve the space.
- Best business premises
Open to all industrial or office premises, shops and garage forecourts. Judges will look for displays that enhance the local area.
- Best pub or restaurant
Open to all pubs, hotels, restaurants or cafes. The area must be visible to the passing public and judges will be looking for the most attractive floral design or display.
- Best school garden
Open to all schools in Southwark. Judges will be looking for good involvement by children and best use of school grounds with a variety of plantings.
- Best allotment site
Judges will be looking for well kept allotment sites with evidence of good community spirit.
- Best housing estate (new)
Judges will be looking for the overall impact of the estate including balconies, private gardens and communal areas. Active involvement of local tenants and residents in improving the estate will be critical.
Competitions for children
There is also a children’s art competition and vegetable growing competition. These will be displayed and judged at the borough wide schools' event Green Space 2009 on July 10.
