Wildwatch The BBC returns to Southwark as part of Autumnwatch
Residents from across Southwark are being urged to roll up their sleeves and pick up tools on Saturday October 25, as part of BBC's Autumnwatch.
Local people are encouraged to join a local project and take part in a day of community gardening activities at six sites across the borough of Southwark. There will be tasks to get involved with from clearing brambles, planting bulbs to litter picking.
In June the site was transformed into a wildlife haven with help from the BBC, the local community and Southwark Council staff. On Saturday October 25, the aim is to add seating, wildflowers, scrubs, native trees and hedgerow, designed to encourage more birds, bees and butterflies to the area.
Councillor Jeff Hook, executive member for the environment at Southwark Council, says: "This is a great chance for locals to pick up their tools and get involved. Transforming Surrey Square into a haven for wildlife back in June was a huge success, and this weekend's event is an opportunity to build on our good work and give a handful of green spaces across the borough a bit of an eco-makeover."
Autumnwatch bike ride
A team of green-fingered Southwark cyclists will take part in a special bike ride, stopping off at each of the six sites to lend a hand. Along the way they will visit the SWAT (SpringWatch Action Team) project in Surrey Square.
The six community projects taking part in the Autumnwatch celebrations are:
- Friends of Burgess Park
- Dulwich Park Friends
- Young Friends of Southwark Park
- Friends of Nursery Row Park
- Friends of One Tree Hill
- Kingslake Estate Residents Association

Breathing Places
BBC Breathing Places is a major campaign to inspire and motivate people to create and care for nature-friendly green places wherever they live. Find out more about the Breathing Places project.
Representatives from the BBC and Southwark Council staff will be at Surrey Square from 10am to 4pm and there will also be representatives from the London Wildlife Trust.
Southwark Council was the only London council to successfully bid for money from BBC SWAT (June 2008). The BBC and Southwark Council funded the original event, and are now jointly funding this follow-up Autumnwatch event.
