Working for Southwark’s Wildlife The Southwark biodiversity action plan has now been adopted.
This plan includes actions to create majestic meadows and mange wonderful woodlands, and help protect nationally and regionally important habitats and species.
It focuses on the specific habitats of
- Parks and open spaces
- Woodland and private gardens
and the following specific species
- Bats
- Stag beetles
- Corky fruited dropwort
Our work is largely delivered through the Southwark biodiversity partnership. Although all departments have the opportunity to contribute to the actions in the plan - such as greening council estates and ensuring bats and birds are protected when delivering developments.

Positive actions
Habitat action meadows
In Southwark Park a 1500 square meter meadow is being created with a special mix of flowers that offer an extended period of bloom and benefit many insects such as bees.
Species action bats - The bat roost project
In 2006 we received funding from SITA Trust, to build a large bat hibernacum in Sydenham Hill disused railway tunnel. This includes monitoring of bat populations and potential roosts and bat walks.
