Young Friends of ParksBackground info rmation
The Young Friends of Parks (YFP) aims to encourage young people aged 8 to 14 to become involved in their local park. Currently there are three parks which have YFP groups
YFP Activities
The YFP members work very hard to help make their park a more fun place for other children and young people. The young people also get to go on free residential holidays and trips. So far the members have been
- Fundraising to get a splash pool in Peckham Rye Park
- Campaigning for a new playground in Burgess Park
- Applying to Cleaner Greener Safer for community gardening plots in Southwark Park
- Working with Groundwork Southwark as young consultants on the play needs of Burgess Park
- Running a London wide music event in Southwark Park for young people
YFP Achievements
The Young Friends of Burgess Park members have
- Applied for and received £5,000 to hold an awareness raising day to gain local support in rebuilding the playground in the park
- Helped to raise £666,000 to redevelop Chumleigh Gardens and build a new playground at Chumleigh through raising the profile of the existing playground
- Developed a vegetable garden and won £2,000 to buy gardening equipment and steel toe capped boots to improve their plot
- Raised £3,000 to go on a residential holiday

The Young Friends of Peckham Rye Park members have
- Received £600 to hold a summer party and create a minibeast play area
- Applied for and won £1000 to research water play areas and hold an information day for other children and young people
- Supported a Cleaner Greener Safer bid for a splash pool in Peckham Rye Park of which £100,000 was awarded
- Presented their research findings at a public meeting to discuss the splash pool

The Southwark Park Young Friends have
- Designed, created and now maintain a sensory garden and a minibeast city
- Built bat boxes and bird boxes to improve the biodiversity of the wildlife area
- Raised £7,000 to host a children and family fun day, called Park It!, around the bandstand in Southwark Park, with local young people providing the musical entertainment. This was funded by Greenspace, only one London borough is chosen each year to host the event
- Successfully applied for £6,000 to run a health promotion day in Southwark Park for young people, this consisted of a variety of activities and information stalls, all of which were free such as kickboxing, yoga, bhangra dance and healthy food
The Young Friends of Southwark Park is the oldest established YFP group. As a result they have separated into two groups, as the older members didn't want to leave when they turned 14. They felt the YFP group was the only place where they could express their views and then be supported to action them and so make a difference.
