News and developments

Belair Park project

Southwark Council will shortly be undertaking an exciting new project in Belair Park, the project will incorporate the following works

  • construction of a new building which will provide new sports changing rooms
  • youth hub facilities for local young people
  • converting the old chapel building into much needed public toilets
  • improvements to the car park surface

During the project unfortunately the existing changing rooms will not be available and the car park will need to be closed during the surfacing works. We would recommend that public transport is the best option to reach the park during this time. For more information please email sharon.lomas@southwark.gov.uk or call 020 7525 0878.

Brief history

Belair House was built in 1785 in the style of, or possibly by, the architect Robert Adam. Its grounds included an artificial lake made by damming the river Effra. The landscape is Grade II listed, and listed structures in the park include the park lodge and entrance gate. In 1965 Belair became a public park when the London Borough of Southwark was formed. There is a restaurant at Belair House, and facilities include four tennis courts, a skate park, a play area, a lake, sports pitches and a wildlife area.
